A Complete Line of TGF-b Products

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-b) is a cytokine that plays pivotal roles in several biological areas, including cell growth and survival, inflammation, hematopoiesis, and tissue differentiation. This cytokine can be found in several forms, including small and large latent complexes, and in a free, active form. Wen et al. utilized our LEGEND MAX Free Active TGF-b1 ELISA Kit to look at how mesenchymal stem cells can prevent corneal cell damage.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are garnering a lot of attention in tissue repair and wound healing for their ease of isolation, self renewal, differentiation potential, and anti-inflammatory ability. Previous animal corneal injury models showed that injected MSCs migrated to the injury site to promote wound healing. Wen et al. investigated the possible mechanisms behind MSC wound healing in vitro. When MSCs were co-cultured with IFN-y and TNF-a, they prevented upregulation of MHC I and II and ICAM-1 (a ligand for LFA-1 found on infiltrating leukocytes) on corneal epithelial cells. MSCs also naturally secrete TGF-b1, a potent immunoregulatory cytokine. TGF-b1 production was increased in the presence of IFN-y and TNF-a. TGF-b1 may also inhibit NF-kB activation, but this is to be determined in their model. Overall, MSCs may favor corneal epithelial cell regeneration and be useful in therapeutic treatments.
